Mulled red wine christmas in July

Mulled Red Wine
Today I’d like to share a recipe for Mulled Red Wine (gluhwein)
But before I get to the recipe I’ll give you some fun facts & history about Mulled Wine.
I had my first taste of Mulled Wine in New Zealand at a bar in the 90s at Coronet Peak after a long days skiing & then again in Canada at the Mount Whistler ski resort in British Columbia in 2010.
But did you know that it was the ancient Roman’s who first created Mulled Wine when they were conquering Northern Europe & was a way to warm up the soul & bellies during the harsh European Winters? but it was the Germans who perfected the recipe from the Romans & is now traditionally drunk at Christmas & more importantly served to skiers & boarders when they come in from the snow to warm them up & relax.
Please note that the Mulled Wine is still alcoholic even when warmed as it can increase the alcohol content to 15% & when drunk mulled wine will go straight to your head giving you a feeling of light-headedness so drink responsibly.
This recipe will serve 8 glasses approximately
Ingredients
185ml orange juice
100g caster sugar
1 orange, rind peeled
3 cinnamon sticks
6 whole cloves(not garlic cloves)
2-star anise
1.5lt red wine (I prefer Merlot but any type of red wine will do)
100g raisins
2 golden delicious apples peeled cored & diced
Method
1 combine orange juice sugar orange rind cinnamon sticks raisins star anise cloves & apple in a saucepan over medium heat & stir for 3 to 5 mins til sugar has dissolved (do not boil but bring to a temperature that is warm)remove from the stove & cover & stand for 30mins to infuse & develop the spicy flavours.
2 add red wine to the spiced orange mixture & warm through till just before boiling point.
Pour into heatproof glasses & enjoy.
As always something different & something new, and again please drink responsibly !!!
