Turmeric Origins & Fun Facts Today I’d like to give you some fun facts & origins of Turmeric.Its one the most popular spices in the world & can be bought at any supermarket or in bulk at any asian grocery store.
To start Turmeric is a member of the ginger family & like ginger,turmeric are tropical plants,that originated in Southern India over 4 thousand years ago & to this day the region is still the world’s largest producer.
We all know that turmeric is a natural in curries,stews & soups,but just as little as a teaspoon added to any dish will give you a subtle turmeric hit.
Another cooking method is to add a teaspoon of turmeric when stir-frying vegetables or adding a teaspoon of turmeric to water when cooking rice or adding a tablespoon of turmeric to lamb koftas,as can be found on our menu for that extra kick.So if its that extra hit your after when cooking at home turmeric is the go to spice.
Turmeric is that golden-yellow coloured strongly flavoured spice w/ ancient origins but its medicinal values can also be traced back to ancient times in India as early as 500 BC.
It might surprise you but turmeric was first used as a dye & could turn white fabrics a bright orange-yellow & has been used to dye clothing & saris for centuries.It has also been used as a dye for foods like cheese & yoghurt as turmeric is a natural preservative.
But the real medicinal uses of turmeric are well known after its used in cooking.
Turmeric has traditionally been used as a treatment for a variety of illnesses like indigestion,colds & even surface wounds.
Even today turmeric is being served up as smoothies for its status as being a superfood,& in recent times turmeric has been associated with weight loss ???
Why ??? Well turmeric is a antioxidant called ‘curcummin’ an anti inflammatory which has been used for years & years in medicine,it might not be a strategy for weight loss but turmeric does help weight loss with a boost in burning body fat,so unfortunately you’ll still have to eat healthy & exercise ?.
Also did you know that turmeric can prevent or even slow down Alzheimer’s disease,can help as a natural treatment of Arthritis & when drunk as a tea can boost the immune system & even lower Cholesterol.
Turmeric ???? Who’d have thought that such a versatile spice would be excellent for cooking,used as a dye,a preservative & not forgetting its medicinal values.
